Powerful shearling ram claims top spot in Royal Welsh Berrichon ring!

 

Classic summer show conditions greeted exhibitors at this year’s Royal Welsh, where the Berrichon section drew high quality entries despite bluetongue movement restrictions limiting competition to Welsh flocks.

Judged by Richard Bett of the Yarburgh Flock, the classes were well supported, with breeders bringing forward strong sheep across the board.

Leading the way was Ditton Aldaniti, a shearling ram from Mr Gareth Beynon-Thomas, who was tapped out as Male Champion before going on to claim the Overall Championship. Bred by the James family and bought at Builth Wells in 2024 for a breed record price, the tup was described by the judge as a ‘massive lump of a tup, full of style; pure power.’

Mr Adrian Bowen stood Reserve Overall Champion with Glyncoch Yolanda, a 2022-born aged ewe who impressed with her presence and correctness to take the Female Championship.

Mr Beynon-Thomas also secured Reserve Male Champion with a homebred ram lamb, and Reserve Female Champion with his ewe lamb, who also featured in his winning group of three.

Further class wins came from Mr Bowen, who topped both the aged ewe and shearling ewe sections. Sheep from the Rees and Beynon-Thomas families also placed highly across the board.

Judge Mr Bett praised the overall standard, commenting: ‘Quality all round was very strong,’ and added, regarding his final decision: ‘The ewe was very stylish, but I couldn’t go past the ram’s power.’
