BREED ADVANCEMENT SCHEME (BAS)

After being in suspension due to Foot and Mouth, and changes by Signet in the way performance is measured, the scheme is again up and running.

The BAS will revert to the pre-Sheepbreeder method of recording 8 and 18 week weights.

A computer program then calculates the growth performance of the lamb, taking into account:

1)Sex

2)How the lamb was raised (single, twin etc)

3)Index of Sire

4)Index of Dam

Further adjustments are made based on the birth type and take into account good maternal traits ie high 8 week weights.

The crop of lambs can then be averaged and each lamb rated within the flock. Certificates will be available to aid in the sales, based on - Gold top 20% and Silver top 50%.

It is not proposed to include any scanning features, as we believe the breed (due to the French selection program), has always produced lean lambs.

The BAS aims to improve on this by identifying fast growing lambs with good maternal traits.

The conformation and breed characteristics are something the flockmaster should take into account himself, when selecting future breeding stock.

Likewise Scrapie genotyping is also a separate selection process.

The weigh dates are the same as the French system, so comparisons can be made with these, and any imported stock can be easily introduced into the system.

Our own experience is that imported French stock (incl. semen) has usually been very high quality.

The BAS can supply the lamhing and weigh sheets, and the data can either be returned by hard copy or by email.

If you wish to take up the scheme, or want more details, please contact either Elaine Keith or Charlie Wrightson (see below for details).

It is proposed that for the 1st year re-start there will be no charge, but for subsequent years there will be (likely to be £1 per lamb).
